Creating a gift basket is not difficult, however it takes a little planning. I’ve put together my best tips on how to make a gift basket along with my favorite products.
There are more gift basket ideas below for men, women and for the food lover in your life.
How to Make a Gift Basket
- First you need a basket, any size or shape will work. You can even think outside the box a little and use something unusual. The main thing to keep in mind is – the larger the container, the more you will need to fill it.
- Add filler paper, if the basket you are using is large, add newspaper or packing paper to fill the bottom. Then add shredded paper on top. Remember the paper will get pushed down when you add the items, so add more than you think you will need.
- Begin by adding the largest item first, and taller items in the back.
- Then add the middle size items, and finish up with the smaller items.
- And add small pieces of filler paper to fill in any empty spots.

Supplies
Traditional Baskets
- This Seagrass Basket is 12 inches long and only 4 inches deep making it a great choice for any gift basket that you make.
- A woven basket like this small basket is perfect for any occasion gift basket and it comes is a variety of colors.
- Wire is always a great option for a gift basket. Just be sure you have tissue paper to line it or the gifts inside may fall out.
Unique Baskets
- You can add the gifts to a metal bucket. This one is white and can be used for any occasion. You could also decorate it if you like.
- Slow Cooker or Instant Pot is a great choice for someone that loves to cook. Or for the busy Mom that needs a little more time.
- This large glass jar is a favorite of mine to create a gift jar.
Tissue Paper
- Having a wide variety of colors of tissue paper on hand makes building the gift basket easier.
- Or maybe you like adding a printed tissue paper to the gift basket.
Paper Filler
- Crinkle cut shredded filler paper is my favorite to use. Small openings can easily be filled in with this paper.
Cellophane
- If you want to add a bag around your gift basket, I suggest a Cellophane Bag.
- You could also get a roll of cellophane wrap and use a hair dryer to tighten it up around the gift basket
