Ingredients for Oreo Balls

Oreo Balls for Christmas

Ingredients

  • Mint Oreo Cookies – you will need a whole family size package
  • Cream Cheese
  • Almond Bark – you can also use chocolate chips or other chocolate for melting, I like Almond Bark the best
  • Sprinkles
  • Colored Candy Melts – this is optional, but fun to decorate the balls with

Kitchen Essentials Needed

  • Large Bowl
  • Rubber Spatula
  • Food Processor – this one is my absolute favorite, I like it as well as my stand mixer
  • Cookie Dough Scoop – this is optional, but makes forming the Oreo balls much easier
  • Microwave Safe Bowls
  • Forks – several for dipping
  • Parchment Paper
  • Squeeze Bottles if you are adding red and green stripes

How to make Oreo Balls

How to Make Oreo Balls

  1. Add softened cream cheese to bowl
  2. Crush Oreo cookies including the centers in food processor. If you don’t have a food processor, you can also use a resealable bag and a rolling pin to crush them.
  3. Add cookie crumbs to bowl with cream cheese
  4. Stir the cream cheese and crumbs together until well combined
  5. Using a 2 tablespoon cookie dough scoop, form the ball
  6. Roll the ball between your hands until it’s smooth, place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Chill for at least 30 minutes, longer is fine.
  7. Place chocolate in microwave safe bowl and melt. Start with 1 minute, then stir. Heat for 30 second intervals, stirring after each heating. Stop when there are a few bits of chocolate left, then stir until completely melted.
  8. Using a fork, dip the Oreo ball into the chocolate and shake off excess. ** see my tips below for dipping
  9. Place of parchment paper lined cookie sheet
  10. Add sprinkles immediately

Decorating Oreo Balls

To add the color stripes –

  1. Melt colored candy melts in microwave safe bowl, then transfer to a squeeze bottle. I like using a small bottle for this step. ** see tips below for colored chocolate
  2. Start by squeezing the chocolate onto the parchment paper, then swirl on top of the Oreo ball
  3. Repeat with another color if you like

How to Dip Oreo Balls in Chocolate

Dipping the balls in chocolate takes some patience, here are some tips that I found helpful…

  1. I like using Almond Bark, it melts well and dipping is easy with it. However, because of the dark color of the truffles, it doesn’t coat completely.
  2. Add sprinkles not only because it’s fun, but it also hides any imperfections that the chocolate doesn’t cover.
  3. Work with just a small amount of melted chocolate at a time. Again, because of the dark color of Oreo balls, there are small amounts that fall off into the chocolate.
  4. I like working with Wilton Candy Melts, but they are thicker than Almond Bark. If you find that your chocolate is thick, add a very small amount of cooking oil at a time and stir well until you get the desired consistency.
  5. Be sure to have all your sprinkles ready to go, the dipping process moves very quickly.
  6. Use the two forks method when dipping, use the fork to dip the balls and let the excess chocolate drain between the fork back into the bowl. Then use another fork (or knife) to gently move the ball from the fork to the lined cookie sheet.

  1. Andrea Bartee says:

I was all excited to make these for a holiday party potluck and give as take home treats until I read they has to be kept in the fridge. Now what? Can I make them without the cream cheese or substitute something else for it?

    1. Hi Andrea, you can leave them out long enough for the holiday party, but they need to be kept in refrigerator until then.
I would not leave them out for longer than 3-4 hours.
      -Liz

  2. How would you store these? Do they need to be kept refrigerated?

    1. Hi Judy, yes they need to be kept in the refrigerator because they have cream cheese in them.
You can store them in an airtight container, single layer is best.
      -Liz

      1. Hi Leigh, you can freeze them before adding the chocolate coating.
I would not freeze them with chocolate on them, they might crack.
        -Liz

    1. The amount of almond bark depends on the number of Oreo balls you have. I always start with 16 oz (1 package) and use 4 blocks at a time to melt.
      -Liz

  3. What size cookie scoop did you use to yield 39-40? The recipe says 18. I need at least 36.

  4. These look really good and fairly straightforward to make as well.
Definitely a recipe to keep until we have visitors round, but they would do for other events as well, just change the decoration.

    1. Glad you like them Tony! Thanks for stopping by!
      -Liz

    1. You will need 1 package (16 oz) the amount will depend on if you use all white chocolate, all chocolate or a combination.
It will also depend on if you double dip them.
I typically melt 4 blocks at a time and get about 18 balls from that.

  5. I accidentally bought double filling oreos can I still use them?Re

    1. Hi Renee, they should be fine. Just be sure they are finely crushed.
      -Liz

  6. Hi Liz! Help needed!
I made these last night and left them out on the counter not even thinking to put them back in the fridge. Are they bad now that they sat out over night?! 🙁

    1. Hi Rachel, because of the cream cheese in them, I would not eat them.
      sorry.
      -Liz

  7. Can we use regular Oreos instead of mint?

    1. Yes Alli, any flavor of Oreos is fine.
      Enjoy!
      -Liz

  8. Hi, how long will these stay fresh for? I’m wondering if I can make them in advance, but not sure because of the cream cheese?

    1. Hi Debra, if you keep them in the refrigerator they should be fine at least 1 week. The only thing to keep in mind is the chocolate may sweat when you remove them from the refrigerator.
      Enjoy!
      -Liz
