A traditional King Cake has layers of dough and cinnamon, with a thin glaze and colored sugar. It also, usually, has a small trinket or baby baked inside. The baby, said to represent Baby Jesus, found inside or sometimes placed underneath, and the person who gets the piece of cake with the trinket has various privileges and obligations.

These King Cake Cupcakes are inspired by the King Cake, with yellow cupcakes and layers of cinnamon and sugar and topped with Cinnamon Buttercream in bright Mardi Gras colors!  Read More

Smurfs Cupcakes: Smurfs 2 Movie

Happy Cupcake Tuesday – I’m so excited you are here! Looking for a cupcake recipe? Be sure to check out the Cupcake Heaven page, there are over 200 cupcake recipes and decorating ideas!

When my boys were young, Smurfs were a popular cartoon on TV, even though many were reruns, they enjoyed watching it. Along with Papa Smurf and Smurfette, all the little blue Smurfs were always busy in their village working and helping each other.

With the Smurfs 2 Movie releasing on Wednesday, July 31, I thought it would be fun to share some Smurfs Cupcakes with you. They are super easy to make and would be a fun treat after seeing the movie.

For the blue cupcakes, I used a white cake mix and added the special ingredients to make it taste more like homemade, then colored the batter with royal blue gel coloring. You could also make Blue Velvet Cupcakes, if you wanted chocolate flavor instead of vanilla.

Now, let’s decorate the Smurfs Cupcakes – first you will need frosting, your favorite is fine or even pick up a can at the store. Color about 3/4 of icing with royal blue coloring then fill a decorator bag that is fitted with a #2A decorator tip. Add a large swirl of the blue frosting to the cupcake.

Then fit another decorator bag with a #2A decorator tip and add the white frosting. Add another swirl of white frosting. If you want to add the Smurfs Cupcake Toppers, I found them over at The Paper Affair Etsy Shop, print them out, cut them with a hole punch and attach lollipop sticks.

You could also add some white sprinkles or create a Smurfs face on the cupcakes if you want.

During a recent visit to Walmart Headquarters, I had the opportunity to get a sneak peek at the Smurfs 2 Movie. In this sequel to the blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants, and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer. It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her!

To get a jump start on the new Smurfs 2 Movie, Walmart is offering a movie value pack that includes the first Smurfs Movie on DVD only, a ticket to the Smurfs 2 Movie, a pre-order for the Smurfs 2 when it comes out on either DVD or Blu-ray and a chance to win a West Coast Customs Smurfs Dash Electric Vehicle!

Cinco de Mayo Cupcakes with Chocolate Chili Poppers

By | Celebration Cupcakes, Cinco de Mayo Cupcakes, Cupcakes, Home page - Slider, Special Celebration Cupcakes | 6 Comments

Welcome to Cupcake Tuesday! Be sure to check out the ALL NEW Cupcake Heaven page! And if you are in need to a special cupcake design, use the “Be a Hero” area!

Well Happy Cupcake Tuesday my friends! How are you? I have some really fun cupcakes for you today for Cinco de Mayo, and if you don’t celebrate it, you can certainly use them for a fun party cupcake or maybe even a dessert after a Mexican dinner.

The Cinco de Mayo Cupcakes have Chocolate Chili Poppers on them! How fun! While looking through the May issue of Family Fun Magazine, I spotted the Treat of the Month…Chocolate Chili Poppers and thought they would be fun on top of cupcakes.

See…aren’t they fun? And they are easy enough that the kiddos can help you make them…here’s what you will need…

Chocolate Chili Popper Supplies

  • Tootsie Rolls – 2 midgets per chili
  • Pretzels
  • Red and Green Candy Melts

  1. Place 2 unwrapped midget Tootsie Rolls in a small bowl and microwave for 5 seconds to soften. Carefully {it might be hot} mold the 2 Tootsie Rolls together and roll into a ball
  2. Roll into an oblong shape
  3. Push pretzel into the middle of the Tootsie Roll {be careful so it doesn’t break} and mold the Tootsie Roll into the shape of a chili
  4. Place red candy melts in a measuring cup or glass {something a little tall} and place in microwave to melt. Amount of time will depend on how many disks you are melting. Dip chili into melted candy and place on wax paper until set, about 10 minutes.
  5. Break off pretzel so there is only about 1/2 inch showing.
  6. Melt green candy the same way to did the red, dip the top of the chili into the melted green candy. Place on wax paper to set

For the cupcakes, I started with a French Vanilla Duncan Hines cake mix and added the ingredients to make it taste more like homemade. Then colored the frosting with Wilton Teal, Orange and Buttercup Yellow, and used a Giant Round Decorator Tip to frost them.

And in case you are baking for the adult crowd…here are the Cinco de Mayo Cupcakes I made last year…Margarita Cupcakes

Now it’s your turn…show off your cupcake creations! I’d appreciate a link back and be sure to check out the other cupcakes!

If you are reading this post in email, pop on over to check out all the cupcakes linked up to Cupcake Tuesday!

Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes with Bubble Gum Frosting

By | Birthday Cupcakes, Celebration Cupcakes, Cupcakes, Flavored Cupcakes, Home page - Slider | 19 Comments

Hey! It’s Day 4 already of Spring Week! All this week, I am celebrating Spring with a few friends, GinaKellie, Shelley and Charlotteeach day will be filled with Spring ideas! We kicked off the week with adorable little Lemon Chick Peeper Cookies! Gina shared her Spring Mantel, Shelley shared a Simple Easter Countdown and today Kellie is sharing a Spring Tablescape with a sneak peak at the printable we have for you on Friday, designed by Charlotte!

I’m SUPER excited to share these fun little Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes with Bubble Gum Frosting!! A couple weeks ago, I gave you a sneak peak at some goodies that arrived on my door step from Duncan Hines…the new Frosting Creations!

I could hardly wait to get my hands on the spatula and stir up a batch! Stay tuned for more recipes using Duncan Hines Frosting Creations, I have a fun Easter recipe planned for next week, and more to come!

Duncan Hines Frosting Creations were created specifically for the special flavors, there are 12 of them…a few of my favorites…Strawberry Shortcake, Cotton Candy, White Chocolate Raspberry and of course Bubble Gum!

We have chatted a few times about my love for the All You Magazine. They were kind enough to send me some Duncan Hines Cake Mixes and the Frosting Creations to try. Be on the lookout for the April Issue, grab your copy and check out page 10…there is a coupon for you to try a Flavor Mix for FREE {when you purchase the Frosting Creations frosting starter {$1.70-$1.99}.

I mixed up the Bubble Gum Frosting and put it to the test. My first stop…my 20 year old son…gave him a little taste and asked what he thought…”Mmmmm…Bubble Gum” was Andrew’s response! He knew right away that it was Bubble Gum flavor and later devoured the Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes.

The next trial…how would the frosting hold up to decorating? The frosting is not thick like decorator icing…BUT, it’s not suppose to be. It’s designed for the special flavors that kids {and adults} will love!

Stefan Aps, director of marketing for Duncan Hines says…”Duncan Hines Frosting Creations line gives bakers an entirely new palate of colors and flavors to really elevate their creations.”

After mixing up the Bubble Gum Frosting Creations, I chilled it for a bit in the fridge, then filled a decorator bag with a #12 tip and swirled the frosting like an Ice Cream Cone and added Bubble Gum to the top.

Now let’s chat a bit about the Ice Cream Cones

When I first saw these Mini Ice Cream Cones over on The Wooden Spoon, I really didn’t realize just how tiny they were. I had to take a picture to show you just how itty-bitty they are…fun!

I used the Duncan Hines French Vanilla Cake Mix and added the ingredients I always do to make it taste more like homemade.

And here’s a little trick I learned awhile back…when baking Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes that are sometimes hard to keep from tipping over…bake them upside down!! Yup! Just spray your cupcake pan, add the batter and position the cone on top of the batter.

For these mini cupcakes, I used about 1 tablespoon of batter and the mini Ice Cream Cones by Joy, they come 42 in a box and I found them at Walmart. When you add the cone to the batter, just be sure that the cone is covering the batter, if the batter is oozing out around the cone, you have too much batter, which is okay, you just won’t get a nicely shaped top.

Then when they bake, the batter will fill up inside the cone. Baking time will depend on how large the cupcake is. I baked the mini’s about 7-8 minutes. For a regular size, you will want to bake it about 10-12 minutes.

I think these mini Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes are just adorable! And the Duncan Hines Bubble Gum Frosting Creations makes them even better!!

You can find Duncan Hines Frosting Creations at Walmart and Target on March 26th, but will not be fully distributed in other grocery stores until April 9th.

BUT…guess what?? I have some Duncan Hines Frosting Creations, along with Duncan Hines Cake Mixes for YOU!!

Hop on over and enter the giveaway! THREE lucky Hoosier Homemade readers will win!

Join us for Spring Week!

Disclosure: All You Magazine sent me Duncan Hines Cake Mixes and Frosting Creations to try. As always, the opinions are all my own.
