Modern Farmhouse Living Room Makeover

After we finished the Modern Farmhouse Foyer Makeover, it was time to set our focus on the Living Room. Having a comfortable room for our family to gather and watch movies, have a game night or just be together has always been important to me. I knew that I wanted to stay with the farmhouse style, use the same colors of the ceiling, walls and trim that we had in the foyer. It needed to flow from one room to the next; however, I wanted each room to have a slightly different pop of color.
We decided that like the foyer, we would use black as an accent color, but we also added a mustard color, a little green and a little red. First, let’s start with where the room began…
The window area had shutters, and while I liked them, the space felt a little “hard” with them. The curtains were also pretty boring.
The walls were painted a few years back in a yellowish beige color.
We started by painting the ceiling using Dutch Boy® Platinum® Plus Ceiling Interior Paint + Primer. It’s smooth, even application allowed us to give our fifth wall a facelift without too much effort! After the ceiling was painted, it was time to get to work on the trim and wainscoting.
Just like the foyer, Doug used Dutch Boy® Dura Clean™ Cabinet, Door & Trim with Smooth-Finish Technology in Super White (001W) and a 2 inch Nylon brush. Taking the trim to bright white really makes the space pop!
I am simply in love with this gray color from Dutch Boy paint; it’s called Garden Stone (437-2DB). If I could paint every room in my house this color, I would. The 2” angled Purdy® nylon brush worked perfectly to cut in the edges of the room.
The prep work and cutting-in does takes some time, but if you take the time to do it, then the actual painting goes really quickly. We used the new Dutch Boy® Platinum® Plus Interior Paint + Primer for the walls. The extreme hide technology allowed us to cover up that beige color without having to use several coats.
Doug discovered a new method for painting walls quickly –
- Begin my loading your roller with paint. Then paint overlapping “V” shapes across the wall. Load the roller with paint for each “V”.
- Then load the roller again and work across the bottom and top of the wall.
- To finish the wall, load the roller and start on one edge and work in smooth up and down strokes working your way across the wall.
Now it was time for the the finishing touches – adding new furniture and decorations. We wanted to have some of the black accents like we had in the foyer, so we decided to add some pieces of furniture and give them a face lift using black paint.
I knew we would need a new coffee table, because our other one was the wrong style. Honestly, though, spending a few hundreds dollars on a coffee table right now, especially with our 10 month Husky who likes to chew, just wasn’t practical. So I headed to our local antique store and found this simple table with an enamel top. And for only $35, it was perfect!
Doug measured the height we wanted it to be and cut the legs off.
Then using the Dutch Boy Porch & Floor Interior/Exterior Paint + Primer with Maximum Surface Protection in Authentic Black (437-7DB), he painted the base and legs. We had some paint leftover from the stairs, and decided it would work just fine. And it did.
On top of the table, I began by layering a piece of burlap, then an old cutting board and then a galvanized tray. In the tray, I added a couple books, a galvanized sphere and a vase with flowers (that are the same as the ones hanging on the wall).
The “I love you to the moon and back” block ties into a pillow on the couch and a sign on the shelf. It is a saying that I tell my boys all the time. I also added a handful of artificial cotton bolls that I found in the Christmas area at Hobby Lobby. They are going to be perfect for the tree this year, too!
The next area we decorated was the Gallery Wall. I hunted in about 7 or 8 different stores, and came across some wonderful Farmhouse Style Decorating items at Gordman’s. Here is what I used:
- Farmer’s Market Sign – Gordman’s
- Wall Clock – Hobby Lobby
- Galvanized “&” Sign – Gordman’s
- 2nd Street Sign – Gordman’s – which I had to have because it is the street I grew up on
- Window Frame – $5 find at the Antique Store I found the Coffee Table
- Magnolia Wreath – Hobby Lobby
- Wooden Raggedy Ann – from my decorating stash
- Small Side Table – we had this in the front foyer, and painted it the same black as the coffee table and stairs in the foyer
- Lamp – one I had
- Wire Basket filled with Aqua Mason Jars
Now let’s finish the rest of the room…
The weathered wood with hooks also came from Gordman’s as well as the cotton bolls wreath. The glass jar is one that I had, and I simply added a few fresh flowers.
To add a little texture and different look, I decided a wicker chair would be fun. The “love” pillow came from Meijer. The mustard color curtains definitely bring a pop of color into the room.
The TV stand is the bottom of the Hoosier cabinet that I have had for many, many years. Doug keeps threatening to get rid of it because it just didn’t fit well in any room, but now it’s perfect! We hung an American flag on the wall behind.
Finishing out the decorating, is the Farmhouse Shelf. You may remember it from the easy Farmhouse Shelf Decor ideas I shared last year, or the She Shed. It’s definitely made it’s way around the house before finding the right spot for it now.
On the top shelf, I added a galvanized watering can (my favorite piece to decorate with), and a galvanized 2-tier Rectangular Server that I used left from setting the buffet table. A couple Aqua Mason Jars and a piece of artificial pussy willow.
The next shelf has mustard colored boxes to bring in more of the color from the curtains, an antique lantern, and an artificial green sphere on top of a cardboard box.
Next is a galvanized tray with compartments that I added white candles. And then the next shelf has another antique lantern, the – I love you to the moon and back – sign, and a basket with a few silk hydrangeas (tying that into the foyer).
And on the bottom I used an old suitcase I had.
