Welcome to Day 1 of the 100 Days of Homemade Holiday Inspiration! Each day we will be inspiring you with recipes, decorating ideas, crafts, homemade gift ideas and much more!
Some of my favorite memories are not big, crazy holiday where we ran non-stop, drove to every family member that invited us, or had no time to even talk to each other.
It’s the small things – like Love Buckets on Valentine’s Day, Countdown Bags on New Year’s Eve, a Meatloaf shaped like a Jack O’ Lantern and YES, decorating cupcakes with the kids!
THIS is why I am on a mission – why I want to help YOU build those special memories with your family as well!
BUT here’s the thing my friend – we are busy, EVERY.SINGLE.PERSON is busy – so let’s simplify these special days.

TIPS for Doctoring a Cake Mix to Taste more like Homemade
Begin by setting out all the ingredients – you will need
- Cake Mix – your favorite flavor
- 3 eggs, room temperature
- Buttermilk to replace the amount of liquid on the box
- Vegetable Oil – the amount on the box
- Vanilla Extract
- Add eggs to a measuring cup or bowl full of really hot water to get them to room temperature quickly – or leave them out on the counter until they are warmed up
- To make your own Buttermilk – add about 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar to a measuring cup and then fill with milk to the amount of liquid on the box. For example – if the box calls for 1 cup of water, substitute with 1 cup of buttermilk
- Add the cake mix to a large mixing bowl and using a whisk, break up any clumps in the cake mix, the finer you can get it the better, it will make the batter really smooth
- Add eggs, buttermilk, oil (the amount the directions on the box calls for) and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- Mix until well blended
- Divide batter into cupcake liners using a cookie dough scoop
- You should get 36 mini cupcakes or 24 regular size cupcakes from 1 box mix
- Bake at 350 degrees – mini cupcakes should take 8-10 minutes, and regular size cupcakes should take 12-15 minutes, depending on your oven.
After the cupcakes are baked and cooled, it’s time to decorate them. You will need –
- Buttercream Frosting – or your favorite flavor
- Decorator Bags and Tips
TIP for super white Buttercream Frosting – use Clear Vanilla Extract instead of regular
- Add Buttercream Frosting to a decorator bag fitted with a #2A round tip
- Swirl frosting onto cupcake in one layer
- Immediately dip the edges of the cupcakes into the sprinkles
To create Santa’s Hat, you will need strawberries and frosting.
TIP on Strawberries: Cut off the stem of the strawberry and lay them down – cut side down – on a piece of paper towel. This will help prevent the strawberry juice from leaking onto the cupcake.
- Add Buttercream Frosting to a decorator bag fitted with a #21 Star Tip
- Pipe on a topper for Santa’s Hat
Add strawberry to the cupcake and you are done.
