I always thought roses were difficult to take care of, but after planting our Easy Elegance® Roses a couple months ago, I quickly learned that roses aren’t difficult to grow. They are actually really easy.

SUMMER CARE TIPS FOR ROSES

Summer Care Tips for Roses – Tip #1

Deadheading – It’s important to remove the buds that are done blooming. To deadhead the bloom, use a good pair of hand pruners, and snip the bloom about 1/4 inch above the set of leaves. You will notice that the leaves are either three, five or even sometimes seven or nine leaflets, this is where you want to focus on cutting. Be sure to cut the stems back to where the wood is strong enough to support a new rose.

Clean Up – Be sure the area around the roses is free from trimming, dead leaves, old blooms and weeds. If the area is not kept clean, is can be a breeding round for fungal diseases.

Summer Care Tips for Roses – Tip #3

Mulching – When we planted the roses, we mulched the area around the roses, you can see the difference in the photo above how quickly the mulch deteriorates. It’s best to keep the area around the roses mulched. You can use organic mulch, manure or compost.

Watering – Roses can be a little finicky when it comes to watering. Roses like a good, deep soak to promote deep rooting. It’s best to create a watering well around the base of the rose, and give them a good soaking at least once a week. This will depend on the amount of rain you receive as well.

Summer Care Tips for Roses – Tip #5

Fertilizing – It takes a lot of energy to produce those gorgeous blooms. Be sure to fertilize your roses in midsummer. You can choose from a variety of fertilizers; granular, liquid, organic or slow release.
