Ombre Cupcakes in a Jar for St. Patrick’s Day

We are kicking off our St. Patrick’s Day fun with these easy Ombre Cupcakes in a Jar! Ombre…graduated colors…are all the rage now! I think they look simply beautiful in a layered cake, but we are keeping it easy today and stacking the green cupcake layers in a small jar with Marshmallow Frosting. Then topping them off with a few sprinkles, wrapping with green twine and a fun FREE St. Patrick’s Day printable!

Serve these at a party, as a special treat for the kiddos or add a lid and give them as a gift, whatever you decide…they are sure to be a hit!

After the cakes are baked (recipe below), layer them in the jars alternating with Fluffy Marshmallow Frosting, add a few sprinkles on top for color.

Then tie the jar with green Baker’s Twine or you could use ribbon.

Ombre Cupcakes in a Jar

Ombre Cupcakes in a Jar for St. Patrick’s Day

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

A fun presentation for cupcakes. Recipe from HoosierHomemade.com

Ingredients

  • 1 white cake mix
  • 4 eggs, room temperature is best
  • 1 cup buttermilk {splash of vinegar in a measuring cup then fill with milk, let set a few minutes}
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • Wilton Kelly Green Coloring
  • Frosting - your favorite or Fluffy Marshmallow Frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray 3 square 8x8 baking pans with cooking spray
  2. Combine cake mix with eggs, oil and buttermilk
  3. Divide into 3 separate bowls, mine was a little more than 1 cup in each bowl
  4. Color each of the cake batters a different shade of Kelly Green {or your favorite color}
  5. Spread each color evenly in an 8x8 baking pan
  6. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean
  7. Cool completely
  8. Use the jar as a cookie cutter, and cut circles of cake
  9. Layer in jar alternating with frosting
  10. Add sprinkles for color
  11. Tie with twine, add a spoon and a printable {optional}

Notes

Total time includes layering the jars and decorating them.
You could use these same method with any color, especially for a birthday party.
The size of the jar will depend on how many you get out of this recipe. I got 6 jars.

  1. I made the recipe and the cupcakes and frosting were amazing! How did you put the frosting in the containers? I found that I kept getting it against the glass and it turned out to be messy! Thank you!

    1. Hi Kait, I use a plastic decorator bag, the kind you would use to decorate cakes or cupcakes, it’s easy that way. Glad you liked them.
