Easy Winter Crafts
It’s that time…the Christmas decorations are all down and the house looks a little bare. Time to gather the kiddos and let the crafting begin! Today I have 3 Easy Winter Crafts for you to create!
We have lots to cover, so let’s get right to it! First, the Paper Snowman Garland…
I found everything I needed at Walmart, let’s gather our supplies…
Snowman Garland Supplies
- Scrapbook Paper
- Straightedge Cutter
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Snowman Pattern – I used one from Better Homes and Gardens, you can download it HERE
- Spray Adhesive, optional {not shown}
- Glitter, optional
How to make a Paper Snowman Garland
- Measure the width of your pattern, the snowman I used was 2 + 1/4 inches wide. With a ruler and pencil, mark the scrapbook paper every 2 + 1/4 inches.
- Cut off any excess you have with the straightedge cutter or scissors
- Fold accordion style, back and forth
- Cut out the snowman pattern and trace onto the scrapbook paper. I was able to get 3 sets from one piece of scrapbook paper.
- Cut out snowman. DO NOT cut the edge where the arm ends
- Now you should have a strip of snowmen. Lay on wax paper, spray with a light coating of adhesive and sprinkle with glitter, if desired. Let dry a couple hours or overnight.
Now let’s get busy building Mr. Snowman!
Let’s gather our supplies…
Snowman Supplies
- Styrofoam balls – I bought 1 package with 2.5 inch and another with a variety of sizes {it was much less expensive to buy them this way}
- White Yarn – I bought Bernat Baby Blanket {1 skein was more than enough to make the Snowman and several Snowballs}
- Black Felt
- Ribbon – I bought some that looks like a scarf
- Black Fuzzy Sticks – aka Pipe Cleaners
- Wooden Skewers – found in the kitchen area
- Acrylic Paint – orange and white
- Small wooden disks for the snowman to sit on
- Straight pins
- Foam paint brush
- Buttons
- Hot glue gun or other adhesive
Build a Yarn Snowman
- First step, you will need to cover the balls.
- Tie a knot in the end of the yarn and secure it to the Styrofoam ball with a straight pins
- Then wrap the yarn around the ball until it’s all covered
- Secure the end with another knot and pin
Snowman’s Felt Hat
- Cut a rectangle from the black felt. I used a 4×7 inch piece. Create a circle by either glue or sew it together. The size of the circle will depend on the size of the snowman’s head.
- Pinch together the top 1/3 of the felt circle, secure with a rubber band and make small cuts in the edge to resemble fringing
- Roll up the bottom and wrap a piece of yarn around to hide the rubber band
Now it’s time to paint the wooden base white for the snowman to sit on and the wooden skewer orange for the nose.
Snowman Arms
- Cut a piece of pipe cleaner about 2 inches long and fold in half
- Cut another piece of pipe cleaner for the arm, the length you want and wrap the small piece around the end, creating hands
Now let’s put Mr. Snowman together
- Cut a piece of wooden skewer about 3-4 inches long, push into the bottom of the head and the other end into the body. Do the same with the body and the bottom snowball.
- Attach the hat with hot glue or other adhesive
- Cut the orange skewer to the length you want the nose and push it into the snowball
- Add the buttons for the eyes and on the body
- For the mouth, use black straight pins, small buttons or beads
- Use a wooden skewer to make a hole for the arm and gently push the arm into the body
- Tie the ribbon for a scarf
Now it’s time for the Paper Snowflakes. Let’s gather our supplies…
Paper Snowflake Supplies
- Copy paper
- Straightedge cutter
- Scissors
- Spray Adhesive, optional {not shown}
- Glitter, optional
How to make Paper Snowflakes – the easy way
- Cut a piece of paper square – this snowflake is 3.5 x 3.5 inches
- Fold in half diagonally
- Fold again
- Fold in the ends to the middle
- Cut the wings off the bottom
- Now you can either just free hand cut your design like I did, or use a template. I shared several templates last year, or you can find some on Marcel Crafts.
I made a few extra yarn balls to lay on the shelf too. The fluffy snowballs, are yarn wrapped around my fingers, secured in the middle with another piece of yarn, and then cut the ends, and fluff.
So how about it? Grab your scissors and paper, round up the kiddos and get crafting this weekend!
