Puppy Love Pops Supplies:

  • Frozen Pound Cake
  • Vanilla & Chocolate canned frosting…I know, but it really melts the best
  • Pink Forks
  • Ears – Tootsie Rolls and Caramels
  • Fur – Graham Crackers and Oreos, crushed
  • Mouth – Conversation Hearts
  • Nose – Mini Red M&M
  • Eyes – Mini chocolate chips

Step 1
  • Cut 1/8 inch off each end of the pound cake, then cut into 1 inch – the cake I bought had handy little marks every inch.
  • Using a 2 inch heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out hearts. The book says you can get 2 hearts from every piece of cake, I was only able to get 1, so it definitely depends on the size and shape of your cookie cutter.

Step 2

  • Push the forks into the cake, place them on a a cookie sheet with wax paper and freeze at least 15 minutes

Step 3

  • Meanwhile, make the ears, soften caramels and Tootsie Rolls, one at a time, in the microwave 3-6 seconds, be careful handling them.
  • Roll out with a rolling pin and cut out a tear drop shape. I made a template with parchment paper. Lay on wax paper and set aside.
  • Crush graham crackers and oreos and place in small bowls.

Step 4

  • Reserve about 1/4 cup vanilla frosting for decorating the face.
  • Combine the remaining vanilla frosting and 1/4 cup chocolate frosting and melt in microwave about 20-30 seconds, you want the consistency to be like heavy cream {unwhipped}

Step 5
  • Dip cake into frosting, coating both sides. Sprinkle with crumbs, and place on wax paper. Put back into freezer.
  • I found it best to let them freeze another 15 minutes or so, they were easier to handle.

  1. Can anyone think of another less time consuming alternative for the ears? Making Friday for my twin daughters’ preschool class and need 30.

    1. Hi Jessica, do you mean cutting them with a template and knife? Or you want something different for the caramels or tootsie rolls? Maybe a cookie cutter with work faster.

      1. I was thinking something I could cut with scissors or not have to alter at all like a sheet of caramel more fruit rollup I could use kitchen scissors for that or pretzels for example for something that wouldn’t need to be altered at all.

        1. The only thing I can think of right now is a sheet of fondant. I have not worked with fondant though, so I’m not sure.

  2. Tried making these about two years ago for my daughter’s Valentines dance. So not as easy as it looks. Im a Illustrator/graphic artist and i really enjoy making different cupcakes for each party and they all generally come out pretty darn good, but these I have to say were not so hot. Not one of my better creations. Relly cute idea but good luck to anyone who takes on the challenge !

  3. I love these! They are absolutely adorable! I was worried about the same thing Allison was asking about the icing melting. I want to make them for my son’s Valentine’s party at school and would be dropping them in the morning and the party is toward the end of the school day. Do you think these could be made with chocolate melts? Like the type you use to make chocolate covered pretzels… .

    1. Hi Katelyn, you could certainly use chocolate melts. The icing won’t melt, but it may become sticky throughout the day.
      Happy Baking!

  4. Once you make these adorable puppy pops, do they need to stay refrigerated? I was going to put them in cellophane bags and bring to work, but didn’t know if the frosting would melt…

    Thanks,
    Allison

    1. Hi Allison, yes I would keep the puppy pops in the fridge. Be sure they are set up well before you put them in bags to avoid any frosting messes.

      1. Thanks for your quick reply. One more thing… is there another type of frosting that could be used that makes more of a hard shell where they wouldn’t melt? Just wondering.

        1. The canned frosting is the best to use because it melts and re-hardens. The only other thing you could do, that I think of is cover them in fondant, which might be a hassle.

  5. These are adorable! I tried making these but I didn’t get the family size pound cake and it wasn’t large enough for one cookie cutter. How do you coat the cake so evenly?

    1. Hi Isabel, to coat evenly, make sure the frosting is thin, it will look too thin, but don’t worry, it will firm up, dip then shake a little.
      Hope that helps!
      ~Liz

  6. I was looking for something different and fun to make for our valentines party! My girls and I will have a blast making these. I love how so many of your recipes are “so doable” 😉
