Balancing your Decorating Style

It can be difficult sometimes to decorate your home the way you like, but still have it function well. Whether you live in a small or large home, have a small family or a large one, keeping your home organized can also be difficult. Balancing your decorating style with function can be challenging.

I have been kind of lucky that I love to decorate with old, vintage and antique items. Raising three boys {and a large black lab dog} has definitely been a challenge to keep the house clean, but I didn’t have to worry about the furniture getting bumped into and broken.

A very easy decorating tip I learned long ago is to use the items you are decorating with for storage. Whether you need a spot for toys, magazines or even sprinkles for your cupcakes…incorporate them into your decorating style.  We love taking picnics and eating outdoors during the Summer, so I simply added a picnic basket to the Hoosier Cabinet filled with items we need.

The Baker’s Rack that I painted, holds cookbooks and magazines.

And displaying sprinkles in old spice jars is not only pretty, it functions really well. One of the problem areas that I do struggle with though is our floors. Our home was built in 1926 and apparently it was popular back then to add brick floors. While I love the look, they don’t really function very well, they are cold in the Winter, hard to keep clean and moving a chair across them sends shivers up my spine.

The rest of our home has hard wood floors with the exception of one bedroom, which has carpet. The Living Room is in desperate need of a new floor, but taking a chance on something getting spilled on carpet is also a concern. CarpetOne Resista might be the answer…it is exceptionally durable, repels stains and feels ultra-soft underfoot.

I’m curious to know, in your home, how do you balance your practical needs with your style wants?
