Today I’m sharing my Mother-In-Law’s recipe for Jam Cake. She made this treat for Christmas for many years, in fact, the recipe I have says that she received the recipe in 1957.

Last weekend, after my husband received a call from his brother, I realized just how important traditions and baking go together. You see, he was searching the internet for a recipe for Graham Cracker Log, my Mother-In-Law made it for years also. And, what to his surprise (and mine
) in a Google search, up pops HoosierHomemade. Unfortunately, my husband’s family does not live near us. His brother, who just retired from the Air Force after 25 years of service, lives out West. So, how fun it will be for family to be able to head to their computer and have some traditional family recipes. And, how great it will be when my boys grow up and get married, they will have all my recipes.
Jam Cake (not sure why it’s called cake, because I made it in bread pans)
Ingredients:
- 2 c. Sugar
- 1/2 c. Oil
- 2 c. Buttermilk (I put 2 T. vinegar in a measuring cup and added enough milk to make 2 cups, and let it set a few minutes)
- 1 c. Jam (Strawberry is best)
- 4 c. Flour
- 2 t. Baking Soda (that’s teaspoons Dave
) - Pinch of Salt
- 1 t. Ground Allspice
- 1 t. Nutmeg
- 2 t. Cinnamon
- 1 c. Raisins
- 1/2 c. Nuts, chopped
Directions:
Whisk together sugar, oil and buttermilk.

Add jam.

Combine dry ingredients, gradually add to liquid mixture.

Stir in raisins and nuts. When I add raisins to bake goods, I always add a pinch of flour and use my fingers to mix it in, breaking up any raisins that are stuck together, then they distribute throughout the bake good better and don’t fall to the bottom.

Bake at 400 degrees, for about 40 minutes for small bread pans. You can also bake this in a large bread pan or Angel Food Cake pan. I got 7 small loaves out of 1 batch.

Well, it’s loaf cake.
How cool that your husband’s brother found your recipe online and very sweet that your recipes will be saved for your own children–love that. That one photo where the strawberry jam was initially added and turns the buttermilk, etc. pretty pink is very cool–yum.
Thanks so much for sharing this on the Holiday Food Fest! Can’t believe we’ll be doing the last week of that next week–yikes!
