Sports and Invisalign Braces

As we enter Nick’s last trimester of his Senior year, we are also quickly approaching Baseball season. For several months, I’ve been updating you on the Invisalign Braces that Nick wears.

During a recent conversation with him about how he is feeling, he mentioned two very important things.

  1. His teeth are moving…YAY!
  2. He’s REALLY happy that he doesn’t have to wear what the kids call a hockey puck.

Nick had never mentioned it before, but apparently children that play sports, that have regular metal braces have to wear a very large plastic mouthguard. And according to Nick, it looks pretty uncomfortable.

During Football season, because of the Invisalign being small and more fitted, Nick didn’t have to wear the large mouthguard. Now, he did of course, wear a mouth piece, however, his mouth piece was able to be fitted with the Invisalign resulting in a much more comfortable feel during the season.

And I’m sure, especially since he is a catcher, he will also be wearing a mouth piece during Baseball season. Most generally in non-contact sports a very small yet effective mouth piece is worn.

Disclosure: I’m part of the Invisalign Mom Advisory Board and my son received free Invisalign treatment. As always, the opinions and experiences are my own.

  1. I’m wondering what mouthpiece he was able to use. My current mouthpiece was fitted to my teeth after boiling it in water (I’m not yet using invisalign). Did he do that but with the invisalign in? I was afraid if I tried that, it would get stuck in the mouthpiece. Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Zach, I asked my son, and he said he just took out his Invisalign during practice and games, and wore his mouthpiece. That is what our Ortho suggested, but you may want to check with yours to see what they suggest.
      Good luck!
