DIY Fall Craft: Bird Seed Ornaments

Jump to recipe!

My office is surrounded by windows, and my desk faces the front yard. I love watching the birds and squirrels outside my window. These Bird Seed Ornaments are a great Fall Craft to enjoy with your kiddos.

Did you know that if you feed the birds during the Winter months, many of them will stick around?

With just a few simple ingredients that are available at Walmart, you can make these Halloween “Tweets” for your feathered friends.

  • 4 cups Pennington Wild Bird Food {the Finch Blend works well because it appeals to a wide variety of birds}
  • 3/4 cup Flour, all-purpose
  • 3 tablespoons Corn syrup, light
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • Cookie Cutters
  • Yarn
  • Straw {not pictured}

In a large bowl add 3/4 cup flour

Add 3 tablespoon corn syrup and 1/2 cup water

Add 4 cups Pennington Wild Bird Food

Mix until well blended

Line your work surface with wax paper. Press the bird seed mixture into the cookie cutters. Use a straw to make a hole, be sure not to make the hole close to the top or the ornament will break.

Let dry 4-6 hours or overnight, turn them often to dry on both sides.

String the ornaments with the yarn and hang in the tree.

Or you can nestle them in between the branches. And watch your feathered friends enjoy!

  1. I was looking for an alternative to peanut butter feeders. I like this idea. Would these work to mash into pine cones?

    1. Sure, that would work fine, Jill. Have fun!

  2. How long do you leave them in the cookie cutters?

    1. Hi Kim, you should leave the cookie cutter around the bird seed ornament until they are dry. If you remove the cookie cutter too early, they won’t hold their shape.
      Happy Crafting!

I would like to make these with my class. I will pre make the recipe and let the kids put into the shapes. How much time do I have where it is still workable?

    1. Hi Renee, I used the mixture right away. But I would think it should stay fine for at least 30 minutes.
      Have fun!

  4. Made these today. It made 23-I am still waiting on them to dry. Plan on hanging them from real branches and putting them in vases. Will be using them for centerpieces for an adult 4-H Christmas party and making enough so everyone can take one home.

    1. Great idea Donnalee! Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Katie Salisbury says:

These look fantastic and I am excited to make them with my preschool class. Any sense of how many bird feeders one recipe will make? I am trying to decide whether I will need to double (or triple!) the recipe. Thanks!

    1. Hi Katie, depending on the size of your cookie cutter, you should be able to get about 6 out of each recipe.

Your discloser. I think most of us are Wal-Mart shoppers and if we weren’t, your time and talents are worth compensation. You haven’t stirred us wrong yet, so you go girl.

I own a condo but can’t put these in the trees. I can put them on my balcony but how do I get the poo
off of everything? I know you have cleaning solutions, so can you help?

  8. I am making these for our trick or treaters. I will also give the little goblins a nice treat.

  9. Thank you so much, I’ve been looking for a bird thing without peanut butter for so long – my little girl is going to be sooo happy!

  11. I’ve been looking for a non-peanut-butter DIY bird seed project, can’t wait to try this with my kids. Oh and p.s. I’m a fellow Hoosier blogger! 🙂

  12. I love it, I shared the same thing over at TheMotherHuddle.com today except in wreath form. Using cookie cutters as the holder is a great idea especially to decorate a tree 🙂

  13. I completely forgot about these! My mom and I used to make them when I was younger. Ahh, the memories!!
