Spaghetti Sauce from Scratch

I will have to admit, that up until last weekend, I had never made Spaghetti Sauce from scratch. I have made Lasagna, tons of times, but never really thought too much about making Spaghetti Sauce from scratch.

I started by sauteeing some onions and garlic in butter.

Then I added diced tomtaotes, tomato sauce and paste, and a a couple tablespoons each of the spices and 2 cups water

I let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, then I added a bag of meatballs. I buy my meatballs at Aldi, they are $1.99 for about 40 meatballs per bag. Unless I can find hamburger on sale, it’s not really cost effective to spend $1.79 per pound on hamburger plus my time and cooking time to make them from scratch.

This is a very cost effective meal, and I’ll have to say, it was the best sauce I’ve tasted in a really long time.

Meatballs  $1.99

Diced Tomatoes  $.49

Tomato Sauce  $.25

Tomato Paste $.39

Onions, Garlic and Spices  $.75

Spaghetti  $.60  (1/2 box)

Total for Spaghetti and Meatballs Dinner $4.47

This meal could even be for a special occasion, like a birthday. Add a side salad, garlic bread and of course, some Birthday Cupcakes and you have a great Birthday Dinner.

Spaghetti sauce from scratch – something I’ve never tackled, either! My husband is so content with Ragu that I haven’t ventured out to homemade, but I might have to try it soon!

  9. Your spaghetti sauce ingredients look very similar to mine, including the Aldi labels! My husband likes more tomato pieces in his sauce, so I use two cans of the diced tomatoes. We also put about half a cup of Merlot in our sauce, it simmers long enough to cook away all the alcohol but leaves a great flavor.

OH HOW I WISH I could shop there. The cheapest I can get ground beef here is $2.78 per pound. The cheaper blends (80/20) are a little cheaper only about 20 cents difference. A bag of store brand meatballs here is running $3.99.

    Love your site.
