Grab the kids! It's time to have fun making and eating these Halloween Jello Worms! The perfect Halloween Party Recipe, Classroom Treats or even after pumpkin carving! They are sour! They are gummy! Everyone loves them!

Oh how I love Halloween! I’m not sure if it’s all the fun Halloween food there is to create or creating the Halloween costumes and trick-or-treating. The memories that you create with your family by showing them how to make gummy worms will last for a life time. There isn’t a kid (or adult for that matter) that I know that doesn’t love Gummy Worms. Their sweet and sour flavor is seldom matched by any other candy.

Aren’t they cool? These Halloween Jello Worms would make a great family project, gather up the supplies and let the kids have fun creating. We made 4 different flavors and added citric acid to some to make them sour.

Halloween Jello Worms Supplies

  • Jello – you will need 1 box for each batch of worms
  • Knox Unflavored Gelatin – you will need 3 packets for each batch of worms
  • Whipping Cream – you can leave this out if you want, we made 2 batches with and 2 without, it is helpful to release the worms from the straw
  • Plastic Straws – you need the ones that are flexible, it will create the look of a real worm
  • Rubber Bands
  • Food Coloring – liquid, found in the baking aisle
  • Glass
  • Plastic Squeeze Bottle – this one is from Wilton, you could also use a plastic ketchup bottle
  • Citric Acid – found in the canning area at Walmart

First you need to prepare the straws

1.  Pull the flexible part of the straws out

2.  Secure the straws with a rubber band. We used the whole box of 50.

3.  Place straws in a glass. Height doesn’t matter a whole lot, but it does need to be at least 4-5 inches tall

Next you will prepare the Jello

4.  After combine Jello and water (recipe below) and letting it set about 20 minutes, you will stir in the whipping cream

5.  Then add food coloring, amount will depend on the color you want, I added about 10-12 drops

6.  Next, fill the squeeze bottle with the Jello mixture and begin to add to the straws. ONLY fill partially, you want about an inch of liquid in the bottom of the glass (see next photo)

7.  After you fill the straws partially, set in freezer for 20 minutes. This will allow the remainder of the Jello mixture from leaking out at the bottom. You may still have some leakage, but it will prevent most.

8.  Continue to fill the straws

9.  This takes some time, but try and fill all the straws completely. Then place in fridge for at least 3 hours.

After the worms are set, remove from the glass and pull apart. Pull off and run under hot water to remove excess Jello.

After trying several different ways, Doug came up with the easiest way to remove the worms from the straws. Run each straw under hot water for 2-3 seconds. Remove a small portion of worm from the top of the straw (part closest to the flexible portion). And using pliers, clamp and hold the end.

Then using the other hand, gently push the worm out the straw.

  1. Mary, I wish I had read this 1st. Would help a lot

  2. I would modify instructions thusly: First, fill glass with 1/2″ of water. Add bundle of straws, then freeze.

  3. What size are the Knox Gelatin. I have it in a bottle so I could measure it out to make these. Thanks

    1. Hi Brenda, each packet has 2 teaspoons in it. So you would need 6 teaspoons for each batch of gummy worms.
