My Sweet Potato Vine Whine

Jump to recipe!

Let me share with you my Love/Hate relationship with My Sweet Potato Vine!

Oh how I Love Sweet Potato Vine! They really are beautiful and their lime green leaves really make any planting pop! They are super easy to grow, in fact, a little too easy. Add a little fertilizer and you get this…

Yes! This is my cute little wagon, the one with our house numbers on it! The house numbers that you can NO LONGER SEE!

And see…the Sweet Potato Vine, just keeps growing..and…growing…and growing…

It is now almost out to the grass, a good 5 feet at least.

It really does take over everything else around it. I suppose Hate is a little harsh…but you get the idea.

I also planted some in my window box, it’s very beautiful, but the other plants look really small compared to the vine.

And thus…my Love/Hate relationship.

So, what’s your opinion? Do you Love Sweet Potato Vine? Or hate it?

  1. I absolutely LOVE them…they just need to be planted alone….:)
    Yours is just stunning.

love it. My sweet potato vine is deep purple. It is in my kitchen window box and holding up ok under this terrible heat.

  3. Hi,
luv the vine. I 2 have the lime green and also the darker vine….I thin them out when they get to looking bulky.

  4. The lime green and purple would be amazing together.
Love the sweet potato vine, are they a full sun plant?

  5. I do love it and the purple variety too BUT it can go crazy—no fertilizer necessary. For some reason, our lab thinks it is very tasty and trims ours for us 🙂 Your window boxes look great!

I’m with Tammy. Hardy and easy-to grow is always a good thing! I’m sure you could just take some garden shears and cut them back. I know just regular sweet potatoes (is this what they are, or something different?) root very easily. I’m going to go check out Annette’s blog right now. I’ve been wanting something that trails, and this looks like just the thing. Liz, maybe you could replace it with ivy next year? That would still trail, but I don’t think it would “take over” like this has. Thanks for sharing this! Blessings!

  7. I love sweet potato vine too. I did not plant any this year so I am enjoying seeing yours. Thanks for sharing ~~Sherry~~

  8. So pretty! I just love the window boxes. Thanks for the sharing the pictures. 🙂

  9. I LOVE sweet potato vine – I usually plant the lime green and purple ones together – they do take over, but the colors are so beautiful together that I don’t mind. Yours in the window box are especially beautiful, aren’t they?

  10. My aunt has these at her place a couple of years ago. They were in baskets and are just such a beautiful colour. Can you trim it back at all? I think she had to keep trimming hers to keep them off the ground. I like them but didn’t realize they could be that invasive or high maintenance

  11. This is my first time to your blog. I love your sweet potato vines. How would one root it to make a start.

    1. @debbie, Debbie, I buy them already planted, they are an annual, so I’m not sure if you could root them or not.
      Thanks for stopping by,Welcome!
