Kid’s Bedroom Makeover

Jump to recipe!

We have lived in our house almost 3 years, and my oldest son has put up with flowered wallpaper the whole time. Sometimes it’s nice to have a little kick in your pants to get things done.

So when I was contacted by Glidden, as part of the Walmart Moms, I jumped at the chance to buy some paint and re-do Andrew’s bedroom. Did you know Walmart carries Glidden Brillance Collection Paint now? The Brilliance Collection is Glidden’s NEW 2-in-1 paint and primer. Doug was a little skeptical that it would work on a bare plaster wall but I convinced him to give it a try. He agreed after I pointed out how much time he would save (i.e. more time to watch sports). Doug is now a believer, he even says he was impressed with how the painted flowed on the wall and the coverage was great.

Here’s a peak at the lovely flowered wallpaper

Just what every teenage boy wants in their bedroom…right?

So we started stripping the wallpaper…yup…worst job…ever!!  BUT…we figured it out, an easy {if there is one} way to get the job done. We will be sharing our tips next week with you, so be sure to stop back.

Wallpaper is gone! YAY! Now it’s time to prepare the walls for painting, Doug showed Andrew how to fill in any holes and cracks in the plaster using a plastic putty knife and Ready Mixed Patching Plaster.

Then it’s onto the fun stuff…painting! Doug cut in the edges with a Linzer 2″ angular sash paint brush.

While Andrew did the rolling. Teaching kids skills…it’s a good thing!

Here is the corner with Andrew’s closet midway through painting…

Once all the walls were finished it was time to tape off the walls and start on the trim and these cool built-in drawers.

What a difference!

I love how these colors came together. We used Steel Blue on the walls and Cafe Latte for the trim.

Now we are off to Walmart to pick out a new comforter, sheets and curtains. Did you know that they have matching accessories in the Better Homes and Gardens product line? That’s pretty cool! I just found that out a little while ago. So now you can match the paint to the bedding or even in the kitchen, match the towels.

Do you have a room that’s ready for a makeover?

Disclosure: This post is part of a campaign I am participating in with the Walmart Moms. Walmart has provided me with compensation  for this post. My participation is voluntary and opinions, as always are my own.

    1. Thanks Myra! We figured out a pretty slick way to strip the wallpaper, will share next Wed.

  7. I love the color that you chose for the walls and trim, it is very soothing and it looks neat, clean and ‘rich’.

I stripped 7 layers of wall paper off a bedroom in a very old house we purchased once. We took a brand new sprayer used to spray the yard, filled it with warm water and soaked the walls after using a special tool to score the paper.

After letting the warm water soak for 15-30 minutes we used a putty knife to peel it off. Still messy, but much easier after it was squirted with a little water.
