DIY Graduation Invitations

Jump to recipe!

Our oldest son, Andrew graduates from LaPorte High School in a couple weeks. Since we don’t have family that live near us, and won’t be having a super, big party, I decided just to make his invitations.

He went to the Prom a couple weeks ago, so I used one of the pictures that I took. I uploaded it to Picnik, my favorite photo editing site, added a border, his name and year.

I used Microsoft Publisher to make post card size invitations. There may be an easier option, but I’m not very techy, and I know how to use Publisher.

I simply printed them onto white cardstock, and bought some invitation envelopes at Walmart for the ones I’ll be mailing. Then Andrew can have some to hand out to friends. I’ve covered our address, you can never be too safe.

You could use this idea to also make invitations for a birthday, shower, house warming or just about any get together you are planning!

Here’s a short video I took before Andrew left for Prom. Don’t laugh at me too much!

  1. Just found your site…I love it! I am a big fan of anything homemade too! And, funny thing, we both live in Indiana…yay for Hoosiers!
Love your idea for your son’s graduation invitations!
I too love to make invitations and I’ve recently started a website for those who love to make homemade invitations and need some ideas for inspiration. I blog daily about the new invitations I make…I’d love for you to check it out sometime! http://www.easymadeinvitations.com

    Hi CupcakeLady
I am just setting up a website about invitations, so I have been browsing around to get ideas. I just wanted to stop by and say I think you did a fabulous job on your son’s invites. I think adding the picture was a lovely personal touch.
    Best wishes, Julie.

  3. Congratulations to your son! And isn’t he a cutie in his prom outfit?
Hey, would you mind some advice from a mom who’s already been through four graduations? All except the last one took place outside in plus 90 weather. (The last one was on a cloudy, breezy day.) We were able to stand the heat because we brought little portable fans with us! Everyone around us was jealous, LOL! (I also had a water bottle, but only sipped at it because there was no getting to a bathroom.)
I highly recommend picking up fans for anyone attending the graduation, even if it is indoors. They go on sale a lot at Walgreen’s or places like that. Plus, if you have a blackout in the summer, you’ve got a way to cool down later on.
    Good luck to your son!

  4. My son didn’t tell me when the deadline to order graduation invitations was, so I had to take matters into my own hands. I’ve had printer problems, so I found a site online http://www.zazzle.com. I uploaded a couple of his prom pictures & made my own invitations. (I ordered them from the site.) It was a neat type of “postcard”. Everyone seemed to love them. I’m sure I’ll do the same when my next son graduates.

  5. My “baby” will be graduating from college in December, I hate to see what the asking price will be for “official” invitations–these days it really is just as easy to make your own. Thanks for the idea!

  7. Congratulation to him…and you…you made it! Ha! He looks great and I think the invitations are perfect! I don’t really understand why everything that has to do with graduating has to be so expensive! They just want you to continue with the “old ways” and pay, pay, pay! 🙂
