Fall Craft: Covered Letters

Jump to recipe!

It’s that time of year…apples, pumpkins, leaves, baking, comfort food and yes…Fall Crafting! There is nothing better than the warm rich colors of Fall. Today I’m sharing my newest Fall Craft…Covered Letters. The Fall Letters will find a home on the Mantel next week when I decorate it, so stay tuned for that.

We have shared covered letters before, when we used scrapbook paper on the Spring Letters. But this time we decided to use a little chunkier letter for Fall, and add a couple different textures, chalkboard paint and burlap, along with the scrapbook paper.

Covered Letters Supplies:

  • Letters – these are from Hobby Lobby and they are paper mache’
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Burlap
  • Chalkboard Paint
  • Mod Podge – I used Mat finish
  • Scissors or X-Acto knife
  • Foam paint brush for Mod Podge

Let’s start with how to cover with scrapbook paper. I used Mod Podge with Mat finish to apply the paper. These took a little time, they weren’t difficult, but you will need to allow some time for each section to dry.

Step 1:

  • Coat the front of the letter with Mod Podge and place it, glue side facing down, in the middle of the scrapbook paper.

Step 2:

  • Using scissors or X-Acto knife, cut at an angle toward the corner. I started on the top of the letter and worked my way down.
  • Apply Mod Podge and attach the paper
  • If your scrapbook paper has lines or a design that needs to be straight, draw a line on the back of the paper so when you place the letter down it will be straight

Step 3:

  • Now just make your way around the letter, cutting at a diagonal, applying the Mod Podge and placing the paper down
  • Be sure you let the each application dry before moving onto the next

Chalkboard Paint Letter

  • Working in a well ventilated area, spray letter with 2-3 coats of Chalkboard Paint, letting it dry in between each coat
  • Let dry 12-24 hours for best results
  • Wrap chalk in a wet paper towel or washcloth, wet the surface where you are writing and write your words {I use this little trick when writing on the chalkboard on the Mantel, it works like a charm}

 Burlap Covered Letter

  • Use burlap, that you can buy at the fabric store, and Mod Podge
  • Coat the front and sides of the letter with Mod Podge
  • Wrap the burlap around the letter, let dry and cover the back

Which letter is your favorite? Have you started your Fall crafting yet? Be sure to stop back on Monday and see these letters on the Fall Mantel!
