We all have those days…too much to do, not enough time. Seems like lately, I find myself in that situation more than I’d like to admit. It’s always great to have a super fast, easy dessert to serve after dinner, to serve to surprise guests that drop by, or as an afternoon treat.

I remember growing up, when my parents would take us camping, my Mom always made little pies over the campfire that she called Puckies. When I spotted the recipe for these Easy Fried Pies, it reminded me of fun times we had camping. And after cooking up a batch and giving them a try…I was reminded even more.

Easy Fried Pies

Doug thought they tasted like elephant ears, and even though my two oldest boys don’t like cherries all that much, they liked these Fried PiesWith just a couple ingredients, you can whip these pies up in no time! And they are easy enough the kids can help you prepare the pies for frying. On a lightly floured surface, roll out biscuits until they are thin, about 4-5 inches, add about 2 tablespoons filling to the middle, fold over and seal with a fork. Then it’s time to fry them up until golden brown and give them a little dusting of powdered sugar or a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar mixture.

My tip for frying is to have all the pies ready before you begin the cooking process. They fry in about 20-30 seconds, I added 3 pies to the oil, counted to 10, flipped and counted to 10 again, and they were done. Some of them even too brown. So it literally takes seconds to cook them.

Yield: 20
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 minute
Total Time: 11 minutes

A delicious treat that is easy enough for a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 (12 oz) tubes refrigerated biscuits
  • Flour for rolling out biscuits
  • 1 cup canola oil
  • 20 oz can fruit pie filling, any flavor
  • Powered Sugar for dusting or Cinnamon and sugar to taste

Instructions

  1. Remove biscuits from the package, let stand at room temperature for 20 minutes
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each biscuit until about 4-5 inches
  3. Add 2 tablespoons pie filling to the middle of the biscuit
  4. Fold over and seal with a fork
  5. Heat oil in a pan
  6. Carefully add 2-3 pies at a time, depending on the size of your pan
  7. Cook for about 8-10 seconds on each side or until golden brown - I counted to 10 then flipped and repeated counting
  8. Remove and place on paper towel to drain
  9. Dust with Powdered Sugar or sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture

Notes

Be sure you have all the pies ready before you start cooking because they fry up really quickly. You can use 1 tube of biscuits, but you will have leftover pie filling.

Instead of can biscuits can you use store bought pie crust?

    1. Hi Brenda, I have not tried them that way, but I don’t see why not.

      1. Hi Liz, I was wondering what brand of biscuits you used for the pies. Thank you!

        1. Hi Susan, the regular biscuits work best, not the fluffy kind. Any brand is fine.

We just went camping and I made pies with premade piecrust. I din’t think they were nearly as good as biscuit pies. They absorbed a lot of grease and kind of fell apart in the grease. Now, that being said, we still ate them!

    1. Hi Erika, the oil should be about 350 degrees F. If you don’t have a thermometer, an easy way to test the oil is by putting a wooden spoon handle into the oil, the oil should bubble up around the spoon handle.

  2. Temp and length of time to bake in oven?

    1. Hi Denise, that’s a great question! I have never baked the fried pies before, however, I would bake them at 350 degrees, check them at about 5 minutes then you can adjust the time from there. It’s my best guess they will take about 10 minutes to bake.

Can you make the uncooked pies and refrigerate them ahead of time? Then fry them up right before serving?

    1. Hi Meera, no I think they would get too soggy. The liquid from the pie filling would make the biscuits too wet.

  5. Can the pies be made a day ahead, or are they best served the day they are made. Thanks.

  6. I love these little pies..
I do like them fried but bake mine now, making them a little healthier.
I also cook down dried apricots, add a sugar sub, vanilla or almond flavoring for a great filling..
Little hand pies are such a treat….

    1. Hi BJ, I haven’t tried to bake them yet, but I need to, I agree they are healthier that way.

    2. Did you just bake at temp. & time for biscuits?
Would love to try as I’m terrible at frying!

    3. Sounds good but never tried the almond flavoring will try tomorrow.

  7. I have used this recipe for about 30 years now. My mother in law showed it to me. Have also used preserves for the filling. Also, I have used canned crescent rolls for the crust with wonderful results.
