Decorating your Fall Mantel

Jump to recipe!

Well, it’s here…the Fall Mantel is finally done and I’m super excited to share it with you! The rich colors of Fall, and the different textures are always great to decorate with.

I couldn’t be happier with the way it all turned out. The cozy Vintage Quilts in the basket, Railroad Lanterns in the Antique Wire Basket and the Antique Horse really finish off the area.

I brought back in several elements from last year’s Fall Mantel, and added several new ones as well. Let’s get decorating…

We started with the Fall Garland, this is the same one from last year {because I love it so much} but I updated it a bit with new hydrangeas from the yard and a couple wooden pumpkins. If you would like to see how to make your own, head on over to my tutorial!

Then came the Fabric Chain Garland draped over the slate chalkboard. We used to have a large rustic star on the wall, but after using the chalkboard in Christmas decorating last year, I decided it would be pretty cool on the Mantel. I love it!

Next we added the Covered Fall Letters. I think they bring warmth with a little bit of whimsy to the Mantel.

Then the largest pieces were added in, first the wood with berries we found at the county park, and a new little Owl we bought at a Craft Shop in our town, Crows in the Cupboard. If you are local, you must go see that shop! And Mr. Scarecrow that I’ve had for many years.

At the opposite end, an old Railroad Lantern sitting on top of a mini bale of straw to give it some height, and the chunky white pumpkin that was new last year from the same shop I found Mr. Owl this year.

Then it was time to fill in with the smaller items. A chunky orange pumpkin and star from my stash of Fall decorations. And the apples from a local Antique Store, that also sells crafts.

I put the apples in an old strawberry basket with filled a piece of burlap.

So what do you think? Which element is your favorite?

  1. I think its an amazing idea to use brown color, I am a huge fan of colors that are from yellow shades, great work.

  2. are your “FALL” letters attached to the board by magnets or nails? if by magnets, was the board painted with magnetic paint? I was wanting to do magnetic paint and do letters like you did but would like to be able to take letters off and change them up. I fear magnetic paint wont be strong enough to hold them though 🙁

    1. Hi Kelly, we actually just attached them with a couple glue dots. But magnetic paint would work fine. We have a wall in our office that is magnetic and it works really well. I think your idea would work fine. The letters are not heavy at all. But, you might want to try it with a single letter first before doing them all.
      Hope that helps! ~Liz

This Fall mantle decoration is just beautiful. We don’t celebrate Fall (Autumn) here in UK much, and as an old South African not at all! I see what I’ve been missing. How magical. I absolutely love your site which I found by accident, but I have made sure it’s in my favourites now.
I really can’t choose a favourite element, I love the letters, the chain…. gosh just everything!! This is just so inspirational, thanks.

    1. I’m thrilled you like the Mantel, Sandy! And thanks for visiting all the way from the UK!!

  6. Which element is my favorite!!? I’m having a hard time choosing just one. I love the lanterns and I acquired 3 fabric apples at a garage sale this summer, much like the ones you have in the basket, & I was wondering how I could display them. I think you just solved my problem. I seen a cute little apple basket at my local Salvation Army that I will have to go get (if it’s still there) and do like you did.
